Siesta Key Drum Circle: A Must-See Sunday Beach Tradition
Beach Tradition
As the sun begins its slow descent over the Gulf of Mexico, a rhythmic pulse starts to echo across the powder-white sands
of Siesta Beach. It’s a sound that defines Sunday evenings on our island: the Siesta Key Drum Circle.
If you’re staying with us at vacationonsiesta.com, this isn’t just an event—it’s a local rite of passage. Here’s everything you need to know about this legendary tradition and why you need to book your next getaway to experience it firsthand.
The History: From a Small Gathering to an Island Icon
The Siesta Key Drum Circle wasn’t born from a marketing plan or a city council meeting. It began spontaneously in 1996 when a small group of musicians, led by David Gittens, gathered on the sand to celebrate the vernal equinox.
Their goal was simple: to play music, enjoy the spiritual energy of the beach, and connect with nature.
What started as a handful of friends with hand drums and a shared passion quickly grew. Over the last three decades, it has
evolved into a massive, inclusive community event. While it has migrated from its original spot at Beach Access 8 to its current home at the main public beach, the soul of the event remains the same.
You’ll see professional drummers, hulahoopers, belly dancers, and children all moving to the same beat. It is a place where “the only rule is to be kind.”
When and Where to Join the Beat
The drum circle is a weekly tradition that happens every Sunday, year-round.
Location:
Siesta Beach, just south of the main pavilion (between lifeguard stands 3 and 4).
Time:
The music typically starts about one hour before sunset.
2026 Schedule:
Because the start time is tied to the sun, it shifts throughout the year. In the winter months, expect things to kick off around 4:30 PM – 5:00 PM. As we move into the summer, the rhythm starts later, closer to 7:00 PM.
Pro Tip:
Arrive early! The drum circle draws hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of spectators. Getting there an hour and
a half before sunset ensures you find a great spot on the sand and can witness the energy build as more drummers join the
circle.
Why You’ll Love It
There is something magical about the combination of Siesta Key’s 99% pure quartz sand—which many believe has healing
properties—and the primal, hypnotic beat of the drums. Whether you’re a participant or a spectator, the vibe is electric and welcoming. Bring a beach chair, a blanket, and maybe even a tambourine if you’re feeling inspired!
